San Diego Downtown Restaurant Robber Shot by Police

A transient who stole a steak knife from one downtown San Diego eatery and threatened to rob employees at another restaurant was gunned down by police when he refused to drop the weapon and instead approached the officer in an aggressive manor.

The San Diego shooting incident occurred in the Gaslamp District at Fourth and E Street on Monday around 4:30 p.m. after a transient stole a knife with a five inch blade from Greystone the Steakhouse and threatened staff workers. The thief approached another restaurant where he demanded money but was ignored.

When a police officer came up to the suspected thief and demanded that he drop the weapon, instead he became belligerent, according to Lt. William Stetson.

“The suspect refused and instead advanced on the officer in a menacing manner while creaming obscenities with the knife raised,” said Stetson. “The officer fired his handgun at the suspect. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Homicide detectives are investigating the officer involved killing.
