Homeless Man in Escondido Beaten With Bat
As a homeless man slept near an Escondido flood control channel, he was beaten more than 30 times with a baseball bat, suffering major head wounds.
According to Lt Bob Benten, witnesses said that several young men attacked the man just before 2:00 a.m. Tuesday with a baseball bat as he lay sleeping on a bicycle path. The attackers fled before police arrived.
The homeless man was taken to Palomar Medical Center where he remains in a medically induced coma.
Another man had called a short time earlier to report that he had been attacked by three to five men on the same bicycle path.
Four people have been brought in for questioning by police. It is not known if they were involved in the assault.
The flood control channel has had increased police patrols because of graffiti and vandalism although other attacks and robberies have been reported.
